How successful are Oscar fish with the eggs hatching?
Q. My oscar fish have laid loads of eggs. They have eaten some as i take it they are the "bad" eggs. Has anyone had Oscar fish that have actually successfully had the eggs hatch and is there anything i can do that will help? I mean i dont want to start interfearing with nature but does the temperature need to be altered or anything like that? Many thanks.

Q. I am about to buy a baby tiger oscar and i was wondering what's the best thing to feed baby oscars or oscars in general?

A. It is best to keep them on a steady diet of a good pellet food, like Hikari Gold. You do need to keep their diet varied though, for this you can feed worms, crickets, other insects (you can find them but make sure they have not been in contact with pesticides and they are not poisonous), there are also beef heart recipes out their for you to make for them, I will leave a link at the bottom for you. Like already mentioned, feeder fish are a bad idea for multiple reasons. First they are usually not kept in great conditions at the stores and are a good way to give your Oscar parasites, or many other diseases that could kill you fish, or cost you money to treat. Also feeders contain an enzyme that breaks down in the fish and creates a… [cont.]

How long can an Oscar be kept in a 15 gallon tank till it gets stunned?
Q. I have an 125 gallon tank with some other cichlids in it but they are all about 4-5 and the only Oscars I can find at the petstores are like 1 inch. And I know if I put one in there All my cichlids would kill it. I have an 15 gallon tank with nothing in it and I was thinking about buying an Oscar and let it grow to like 5 inches. Will the Oscar get stunned growing before it gets to 5 inches?

How long can my Oscar live in a 45 gallon tank?
Q. I have a 2 inch albino tiger oscar in a 45 gallon tank alone. his final tank will be a standard 75 gallon tank just for him. i would like to know how long the oscar can stay in the 45 (as i dont have enough money yet to get a 75) so my question is... at what size will the oscar be too large for the 45 gallon? how big is 8-9 months? like 7 inches or so?
Asked by BingX14 - Wed Aug 12 17:07:04 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You probably want to upgrade by the time it gets to 8", that could be 6-12 months. Some hints to save $$ and get the big tank sooner. Just buy a BIG plain glass tank and basic stand (if you cant make your own) You can use the filter from your 45gal initially, and get a 2nd bigger filter later as your Oscar grows. Dont buy expensive lights as you aren't going to have live plants in an Oscar tank. Get some simple flouro lamps from the hardware store, just so you can see your fish better. That might save you a few hundred $$, or at least spread the cost, and get the fish into a bigger tank sooner. Ian

Why is my Oscar moving the gravels into a pile in the corner?
Q. My oscar keeps getting a mouth full of gravel out of the bottom of the tank and spitting them into one corner. He has just started doing that this evening, and has been at it for a couple hours now. One spot is almost cleared to the bottom of the tank where he's made a hole from grabbing all the rocks to spit in the corner. Is there a reason he would be doing this? It's not really a small Oscar, always has th same, mostly live diet, the tank is a 55 galon and the water is fine and the fish has always been healthy. He is mainly gathering the rocks from one side where he stays at the most and making the corner pile there too. It's piled up about 6-7 inches high in the corner already, and he is still at it! I only have the one oscar,… [cont.]

A. Nope, though Oscars will do this during mating, they more often will pick a flat rock and lay eggs on there if it's a female. Oscars just like to dig, that's how they are. I don't think it's anything you really need to worry about, it's just in thier nature, but nice to know that you are attentive to changes in thier enviroment and noting thier behaviour. I guess it's best to say kinda like a new office you get, you want to get going in your job, and you've been caught up in that, now you have time to set up that office how it makes you more comfortable? A. Peter Finch for Best Actor in "Network" (1976) There have been posthumous nominees, as well as nominees who died before the Oscars were held. Generally, arrangements are made for someone to pick up an award, as did Peter Finch's widow. Throughout the past, many Oscars have been accepted by people who weren't the winners. Often, nominees are unable to attend due to personal reasons or are on location. I imagine that the Academy is prepared for everything. Others who were nominated posthumously are: James Dean for "Giant"~Best Actor James Dean for "East of Eden"~Best Actor Spencer Tracy for "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" A. Yes they can. If the companion isn't overly aggressive or overly docile ( discuss) they well do fine. Or small enough to fit in one another's mouth. They say it is better to get both fish young so they can grow up together so the oscar has less chance of beating up another fish. That's what I did with my 2 oscars. Got them both at around 2in.

A. Honestly, I would have to say no. Maybe for a while when they are both very small but no. The water temps would be fine for both fish at 78 but honestly I would have to say no. Not only is the oscar's nature to be aggressive, a fancy goldfish is "handicapped" and would not get the food he needs. He also has no defense against the oscar.

What are the necessities to have for conditioning the water for an oscar in a 55 gallon fresh water aquarium?
Q. I'm looking for a good all around water conditioner, one that treats the water for everything (ph, alkalinity, stresscoat, water hardness, etc). I have very hard water and I need to maintain a ph of 7.2 for my oscar. Any info on water conditioning for oscars would be great as well.
Asked by el aji - Mon Feb 4 17:29:06 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There is no magic chemical for water treatment. Use something like Prime to treat new tap water and remove any residual chlorine residue that might harm your fish. It depends on your tap water wether it is needed or not, but if in doubt, USE it. It's cheap and wont harm your fish even if you didn't need to use it. No other water treatment should be needed if the tank is well maintained and the fish is healthy, and the cleaner you can keep the water, the less likely the fish is to get sick and need any treatment. Otherwise find out what your pH and hardness actually are and see if an Oscar can acclimatise to that water. Chances are it can, and will be much happier in a stable pH 8 rather than a rollercoaster tank. If your water is… [cont.]

Q. For a couple weeks I have noticed my 10 inch Oscar having some red tissue coming from its rectum area. The fish has laid one egg and looks like she is about to lay another one. But yet whenever I turn the light on she goes up to the top of the tank and floats on her side. It is crazy. Help? I wanted to add that the water is perfect for the fish and the temp is 81.

A. That most likley is her "breeding tube" she is most likley going to lay eggs the best thing to do is just turn the light off and go do something else for a while and then come back in a little bit and you will probably have eggs.

How small can a role be and still be given an Oscar nomination?
Q. I know it would never happen, but is it possible for an actor with a two minute scene to get nominated for an Oscar? Or on another note, could an actor in a short film be nominated?
Asked by Zachary - Mon Jun 21 01:19:29 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The categories are LEADING actor/actress and Actor/Actress in a supporting role. A brief but startling cameo can do the trick, I recall that Judy Dench won her Best Actress in a Supporting Role for: Shakespeare in Love in 1998 and had barely ten minutes of screen time. Short films have their own category, I don't think that an actor in one has even been nominated, never mind won, but I'm happy to stand corrected.

A. About a week. Oscars are very fast growing fish, it should get 8" at least in a year! Not to mention very very messy and prone to disorders like Hole in the Head if kept in inadequate surroundings. I would suggest taking the fish back to a pet store and if you want to venture into keeping Oscars, get a 75 gallon tank to start for one single fish, fully cycled first, not 10-20-30 gallons, start big!

How much should I feed a juvenile red oscar?
Q. How much and how often should I feed a 15cm red Oscar? And can red Oscars live in an unheated tank? How much and how often should I feed small Silver Dollars too?
Asked by Benjamin Sow - Wed Jul 22 07:24:43 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First off, yes Oscars NEED a heated tank. Unheated tanks have dramatic temperature fluctuations that can lead to your fish suffering, they need stability. As for feeding, this is going to be down to your own discretion and depends on what you're feeding the fish. Oscar's have a bottomless appetite, so feed once or twice a day with a variety of foods and consider their stomach only actually being the size of their eye, despite the begging! Overfeeding results in internal disorders. Same goes for the Silver Dollars. Both these fish are going to grow pretty quickly.

Is it healthy for my Oscar fish to have frequent missing scales from tankmates?
Q. I have three very young oscar fish in a 65 gallon aquarium with two nicaraguan cichlids. They generally get along together but every once in awhile they nip at each other and are frequently missing scales on their bodies. Could this be a potential danger (infection, etc?)
Asked by Wafflez - Wed May 7 12:19:08 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. yes it is a potential problem.. when they bite each other they are breaking the slime layer... however they are oscars they are going to do that.. so you kind of have to live with it... one point of note is that oscars get big... and i mean BIG not sure a 65 is going to handle 3 full grown oscars with two other cichlids.

A. You can try netting the fish.. Some times the chase will cause them to spit out wherever is in their mouth... Also lifting them out of the water in the net can get the pea out.. This can cause some stress to the fish.. But it will be ok in the end.. feeding your fish a pea really???

Asked by Annette A - Fri Sep 12 08:20:55 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Mine does this too. I used to get worried that he would die. You should feed the oscar smaller feeder fish and when the oscar has it in it's mouth you walk away and make sure the room is dark so the oscar is relaxed. Do not stay in the room go out or look throught the door. This will help with the digestion of the food. You should also feed it fiber ike pectin hemicellulose and cellulose as this is fiber and fiber is the digesting mineral that will help and it will keep its stomach clean and make it live longer. Oh sorry I just rad the extra info and I thin you should switch off the lights open the tank and pull out the pleco. He will never be able to digest the pleco. Did you know that you can jump on a dead pleco and its hard skull will… [cont.]

A. This says it best: Determining Oscar Gender --- The popular answer in a discussion about sexing Oscars is that it simply cannot be done other than through dissection or observing mating. However, Oscars are rather easily sexed under certain circumstances, and experienced Oscar keepers can usually determine the correct gender at a glance. An absolutely certain sexing method is by venting, or looking at the fish's vents and comparing their size and certain other characteristics. I usually don't recommend this, because the fish needs to be removed from the aquarium and held in such a manner that the vent can be observed. Anyone who has ever tried this, and has their hands cut to pieces by the extremely sharp 2nd Dorsal, and their clothes… [cont.]
