How successful are Oscar fish with the eggs hatching?
Q. My oscar fish have laid loads of eggs. They have eaten some as i take it they are the "bad" eggs. Has anyone had Oscar fish that have actually successfully had the eggs hatch and is there anything i can do that will help? I mean i dont want to start interfearing with nature but does the temperature need to be altered or anything like that? Many thanks.

I have a huge oscar fish. What would be the best live plants for helping with his home?

How long can my Oscar live in a 45 gallon tank?
Q. I have a 2 inch albino tiger oscar in a 45 gallon tank alone. his final tank will be a standard 75 gallon tank just for him. i would like to know how long the oscar can stay in the 45 (as i dont have enough money yet to get a 75) so my question is... at what size will the oscar be too large for the 45 gallon? how big is 8-9 months? like 7 inches or so?

A. You probably want to upgrade by the time it gets to 8", that could be 6-12 months. Some hints to save $$ and get the big tank sooner. Just buy a BIG plain glass tank and basic stand (if you cant make your own) You can use the filter from your 45gal initially, and get a 2nd bigger filter later as your Oscar grows. Dont buy expensive lights as you aren't going to have live plants in an Oscar tank. Get some simple flouro lamps from the hardware store, just so you can see your fish better. That might save you a few hundred $$, or at least spread the cost, and get the fish into a bigger tank sooner. Ian

Why is my Oscar moving the gravels into a pile in the corner?
Q. My oscar keeps getting a mouth full of gravel out of the bottom of the tank and spitting them into one corner. He has just started doing that this evening, and has been at it for a couple hours now. One spot is almost cleared to the bottom of the tank where he's made a hole from grabbing all the rocks to spit in the corner. Is there a reason he would be doing this? It's not really a small Oscar, always has th same, mostly live diet, the tank is a 55 galon and the water is fine and the fish has always been healthy. He is mainly gathering the rocks from one side where he stays at the most and making the corner pile there too. It's piled up about 6-7 inches high in the corner already, and he is still at it! I only have the one oscar,… [cont.]

A. Nope, though Oscars will do this during mating, they more often will pick a flat rock and lay eggs on there if it's a female. Oscars just like to dig, that's how they are. I don't think it's anything you really need to worry about, it's just in thier nature, but nice to know that you are attentive to changes in thier enviroment and noting thier behaviour. I guess it's best to say kinda like a new office you get, you want to get going in your job, and you've been caught up in that, now you have time to set up that office how it makes you more comfortable? How long will it take an Oscar fish to stop being mad and afraid of me?
Q. I change my whole tank around today and now my Oscar is mad and afraid of me. When I come near the tank he will just hide till I leave. He was never afraid of me when I change around the tank before. How long do you think it will take him to stop being afraid of me? I also got another question too. He has a black spot under his lip that never seen before. What is it and when will it go away?
Asked by mike - Tue Apr 14 19:50:24 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It's a natural reaction. Fish feel vibrations of something comming near by and will retreat to safety. A fish doesn't know that from a potential predator in many cases. Oscars appear to have limited ability to recognize certain keepers, but it's not consistantly enough to show that is a fact. Probably within a day or so, it's liable to settle in, but I don't think the fish is "mad" at you to be honest. My stock often times will fade in color when cleaning the tank out, and a few hours later after everything is done, resume to normal colorings. What you are seeing really isn't anything unusual. What size tank? You're going to have to post a picture of that Joseph. It's hard for anyone to say this is what it is and what you should… [cont.]

Can an oscar and lionhead goldfish live peacefully in the same aquarium?
Q. Could a full grown (14 inch) oscar and a fullgrown (7 inch) lionhead goldfish live peacefully in a 120 gallon tank?
Asked by A Link to the Past - Wed Jun 10 06:01:53 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Honestly, I would have to say no. Maybe for a while when they are both very small but no. The water temps would be fine for both fish at 78 but honestly I would have to say no. Not only is the oscar's nature to be aggressive, a fancy goldfish is "handicapped" and would not get the food he needs. He also has no defense against the oscar.

A. It is best to keep them on a steady diet of a good pellet food, like Hikari Gold. You do need to keep their diet varied though, for this you can feed worms, crickets, other insects (you can find them but make sure they have not been in contact with pesticides and they are not poisonous), there are also beef heart recipes out their for you to make for them, I will leave a link at the bottom for you. Like already mentioned, feeder fish are a bad idea for multiple reasons. First they are usually not kept in great conditions at the stores and are a good way to give your Oscar parasites, or many other diseases that could kill you fish, or cost you money to treat. Q. I was just wondering because I have a 10 gallon fish tank and I was wondering if you can put an Oscar with it. If so, can you have other fish with with it?
Asked by Jersey Girl - Fri Jul 18 16:23:30 2008 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Nope - Oscars get very big and produce a lot of waste. They need a lot of space to swim around and lots of clean water. If you really want an Oscar, you're going to be looking at 55+ gallons. Ten gallon tanks are pretty small, and full grown Oscars would have a difficult time even turning around in one! If you already have a 10 gallon, you have a few options. There are some sample stocking plans for small tanks here:

A. Even if both fish are small, I would not recommend this! They will not stay small for long, and more importantly, even though Oscars can be aggressive, they would not stand a chance against a Flower Horn which is a Hybrid fish that gets many of its traits from the Red Devil. I have rarely seen a Red Devil not eventually kill an Oscar. Please read this article for further information: :~) C

Is it healthy for my Oscar fish to have frequent missing scales from tankmates?
Q. I have three very young oscar fish in a 65 gallon aquarium with two nicaraguan cichlids. They generally get along together but every once in awhile they nip at each other and are frequently missing scales on their bodies. Could this be a potential danger (infection, etc?)

A. yes it is a potential problem.. when they bite each other they are breaking the slime layer... however they are oscars they are going to do that.. so you kind of have to live with it... one point of note is that oscars get big... and i mean BIG not sure a 65 is going to handle 3 full grown oscars with two other cichlids.

What are the necessities to have for conditioning the water for an oscar in a 55 gallon fresh water aquarium?

A. There is no magic chemical for water treatment. Use something like Prime to treat new tap water and remove any residual chlorine residue that might harm your fish. It depends on your tap water wether it is needed or not, but if in doubt, USE it. It's cheap and wont harm your fish even if you didn't need to use it. No other water treatment should be needed if the tank is well maintained and the fish is healthy, and the cleaner you can keep the water, the less likely the fish is to get sick and need any treatment. Otherwise find out what your pH and hardness actually are and see if an Oscar can acclimatise to that water. No real way to fix the problem apart from moving the fish to different tanks. I would suggest you want over 90gal to keep an adult Oscar with ANY other fish Ian

A. Your oscar will be fine. It just needs to digest it. Give it time. Good Luck!

How much should I feed a juvenile red oscar?
Q. How much and how often should I feed a 15cm red Oscar? And can red Oscars live in an unheated tank? How much and how often should I feed small Silver Dollars too?

A. First off, yes Oscars NEED a heated tank. Unheated tanks have dramatic temperature fluctuations that can lead to your fish suffering, they need stability. As for feeding, this is going to be down to your own discretion and depends on what you're feeding the fish. Oscar's have a bottomless appetite, so feed once or twice a day with a variety of foods and consider their stomach only actually being the size of their eye, despite the begging! Overfeeding results in internal disorders. Same goes for the Silver Dollars. Both these fish are going to grow pretty quickly.
