Motor is a device that creates motion. It usually refers to an engine of some kind. It may also specifically refer to:

  • Electric motor, a machine that converts electricity into a mechanical motion
    • AC motor, an electric motor that is driven by alternating current
      • Synchronous motor, an alternating current motor distinguished by a rotor spinning with coils passing magnets at the same rate as the alternating current and resulting magnetic field which drives it
      • Induction motor, also called a squirrel-cage motor, a type of asynchronous alternating current motor where power is supplied to the rotating device by means of electromagnetic induction
    • DC motor, an electric motor that runs on direct current electricity
      • Brushed DC electric motor, an internally commutated electric motor designed to be run from a direct current power source
      • Brushless DC motor, a synchronous electric motor which is powered by direct current electricity and has an electronically controlled commutation system, instead of a mechanical commutation system based on brushes
    • Electrostatic motor, a type of electric motor based on the attraction and repulsion of electric charge
    • Servo motor, an electric motor that operates a servo, commonly used in robotics
    • Internal fan-cooled electric motor, an electric motor that is self-cooled by a fan, typically used for motors with a high energy density

Other uses:

  • Actuator, a mechanical device for moving or controlling a mechanism or system
  • Hydraulic motor, a machine that converts the energy of pressurized liquid flow into mechanical motion
  • Rocket motor, usually refers to solid rocket engines
  • Molecular motor, the agents of movement in living organisms
  • Motor language, extinct since the 1840s, a Uralic language that was spoken in the northern region of the Sayan Mountains in Siberia
  • Motor system, the physiological system that is responsible for physical movement
    • Motor neuron, neurons that originate in the spinal cord and synapse with muscle fibers
    • Motor skill, the ability of an organism to use the motor system effectively
  • Nanomotor, a molecular device capable of converting energy into movement
  • Pneumatic motor, a machine that converts the energy of compressed air into mechanical motion
  • The Motors, a British pub rock/punk band, formed in 1977 by Nick Garvey, Andy McMaster, Ricky Slaughter and Rob Hendry, who was replaced by Bram Tchaikovsky the same year
  • The Motor, defunct British magazine
  • Motor (magazine), Australian magazine

How do I find the motor supply voltage and amps of a given motor?
Q. I found a windshield wiper motor, how do I find the amps and voltage supply required to find a suitable motor driver? Will getting a multimeter, putting a 9v battery into the motor as well as the amps of the battery, and putting this into Ohm's law, and solving for resistance. Then how do I find the amps/voltage drop using this method, or others?

A. If it's from a car not older than 30 years, it runs from 12 volts DC. And I said this last time you posted this question. Current, you will need to determine, either from the manufacturers web pages, or by connecting 12 volts DC through an ammeter. .

How to check whether the motor rewinder has used IP55 insulation while repairing the burnt motor?
Q. Generally, after the motor is burnt,it is sent for rewinding & the motor rewinders repair the same. It is very difficult to findout whether he has used the specified ingress protection insulation class.

A. IP rating is used to determine a piece of equipment ability to work in environments containing water/moisture or dust. This does not apply to wire. The rewind company should be refitting or replacing seals to original standard. There are IEC and ISO standards reputable companies can work to if you are concerned. The type of wire used, should again, be to at least the same level as original. wire insulation is rated by a letter with "G" being fairly common although many rewind companies will wind to class H as standard. If you don't trust the rewind company, then don't use them because the only way to check the insulation class is strip it out, although this is something you may consider if you think the rewind has failed prematurely. What type of motor is generally used to run a computer case fan?
Q. Could anybody that deals with computers a lot tell me what type of motor is most popular for computer case fans? I have seen DC brushless on a couple different computers, but I want to know if that is generally the case. Also, if you could give me a reason why a certain type of motor is used, that would be a bonus. Thanks!
Asked by Ubi - Wed Oct 17 19:06:03 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. DC brushless is the most common type used. It is quiet, and has no tendencies to produce noise signals that could interfere with the computer's operation.
