What size battery cables on a 1992 Ford Explorer?
Q. I have a 1992 Ford Explorer 4WD Eddie Bauer edition. I need to replace the battery cables. I went to buy some and there were a lot of different lengths. What size do I need? Is this a hard thing to replace?

A. Red positive to the starter can fight.go to a automotive parts supplier ,Car-quest/Napa. They will place in your hand just the ones you need for your ford. "Not autozone/checker"don't forget the anti-corrision rings for the post and battery post sealer spray, fords tend to be bad about corrision. And the black ground also has a small wire grounded to the fender on this one.I think, disconnect black first reconnect last always. make sure starter lead is not touching/rubbing sharp or hot parts. You can do it !!!

1999 Ford Explorer - why is there a small plume of smoke coming from the steering column?
Q. Yet another Explorer question. Please note: this has only happened twice. It only happens upon inserting the key into the ignition w/o cranking. It has happened before and after the cruise control recall. The smoke comes out of the hazard lights button (surrounding hole) and the cruise control stick (surrounding hole). HELP!!! Akins Ford in Winder, GA says it's unrelated to the recall. I've heard it's the multifunction switch. Thoughts? I already know there's a colony of evil micro-gnomes living under the steering wheel and that they are plotting the downfall of my truck, so please don't use that as an answer. I want a mechanical answer. :-) Mr. KnowItAll, did you know that you are absolutely no help whatsoever? Bet you didn't. AH HA!… [cont.]

A. Sounds like you have a bad multi-function switch. This one switch controls the hazard lights, wipers, headlamps etc. Get it replaced before it catches fire. Check the wiring too, it may be melted.

How much to replace transmission pump 92 Ford Explorer?
Q. I own a 92 Ford Explorer and need to replace the transmission pump. It was recently serviced (replaced filter and fluid) and was running better but now it slips between gears and is very slow to get into first gear. It's an automatic and it drives like I don't know how to work a manual. I was just curious as to how much it might cost to get it fixed. Thanks.

A. you would be better off to let a transmission shop do this as this is a complete breakdown and while you are there you might as well have the trans rebuilt you can call around to find out the best deals

How do you change a 1996 ford explorer exterior door handle?
Q. I have a 1996 ford explorer sport and the exterior door handle quit working. My boyfriend is going to change it, and he's got it loose. The only thing holding the handle in now is the clip. He can't figure out how to get that out. He said the rod is in the way. any help is greatly appreciated!
Asked by alih1221 - Tue Jun 10 20:20:07 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. alih1221; The clip is plastic. Have him look for the OPEN end on the rod. the rod will release when unlocked from the rod shaft. Once the clip swings free, the rod will come out of the metal hole. Use a straight screwdriver to push the clip from the rod. If the door handle is broken, it is held on by rivets. They will need to be drilled and re-riveted. Takes a special rivet gun & rivets.

A. Ford Motorcraft Mercon ATF. Or Mercon 5. Its a specific fluid. If you use a different fluid you may ruin the transmission. It is pretty pricey, or is known to be around $7 a quart. And you will need about 5 quarts.

A. there are many reasons why your explorer won't turn over as easily as it should, but i'll cover the most common reasons below. - faulty/worn spark plugs: when was the last time you had a tune-up done on your vehicle? many times, worn or faulty spark plugs can be a big reason for hard starts, bad mileage, lack of power, and even miss-fires. spark plugs are what burn the fuel and air mixture inside your engine, so if you don't have a good spark, it'll be that much harder for your engine to turn over as it should. a good quality spark plug from a major auto part store should run you no more than $4 each, although more economic ones are also available. spark plugs should be changed out about every 8 months in order to achieve maximum mpg's.… [cont.]

1994 ford explorer passenger side door will not open with key?
Q. I just bought a 1994 ford explorer from my neighbor. It runs great but as with any used car there are a few "issues." I noticed today, the passenger side door does not open with a key. It goes in, turns, but does nothing. I can open the door once I unlock it with the power locks, from inside and out. I am guessing I need a new mechanism for it, how much does it cost to have these installed, or is there any way to get it working otherwise?

A. you might need a new latch.but first Pull the door panel and see if you do not have any lose parts in the latch area.

A. wow...some of the answers... check idle air control valve. they act stupid only when first started. try holding your foot lightly on the gas pedal. if it stays running nicely then check the iac for sure. i dont know that i am onboard with the cool temp as it would typically cause driveability issues most if not all of the time. my $ would pull the iac, attempt to clean it with brake cleaner and reinstall. if it still acts up and runs with light pedal pressure then just replace it. made lots of $$$ at ford on those...not uncommon to replace if the engine has a lot of miles or tons of short trips carboning it up.

what is the life expectancy of a ford explorer?
Q. we have the opportunity to get a free ford explorer, 10 years old/100,000 miles. do ford exlporers last a while, how are they on maintenence when they are this old? the explorer would be a secondary car. right now our secondary car is a 96 toyota tercel with 170,000 miles on it. guess the main thing i want to know is, would it be better for us to keep the toyota for a secondary car or the explorer?
Asked by smile1108 - Fri Dec 26 21:59:25 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A car will last as long as you will let it. If you change the oil on time and make sure easy things like the timing belt, filter, tires etc are all in good shape, then it should run just fine. Gas won't be as good as your Tercel, but that's expected obviously with more capabilities and a bigger engine. Mine's a '99 with 67,000 miles (YES I know, hardly broken in!) and the only problems that it has ever needed to be taken to the shop for was a bad thermostat and a multifunction switch, which neither were cheap but when it comes to car repairs they are one of the cheaper repairs.

Q. I have a 2002 Ford Explorer Sport 2-door and am trying to locate the computer module that contains the 5-digit master code for the keyless entry keypad system - I've had so many suggestions but nothing seems to pan out -- -- any help ?
Asked by Craig - Wed Oct 21 10:53:14 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I just bought a 2000 Explorer. It was a 4-door, but what we did was open the panel on the left side of the trunk. On mine there was a box in there (I forget what exactly the box was but it had cords coming out of it) that has a factory sticker on it. You need a flashlight and good eyes, but the keyless entry factory code was on the sticker. The Explorer (the 2000 anyway) can only hold 2 codes. It always has the factory code (from the sticker) and then you can use it to program 1 personal code. When you program your code you will erase the previous personal code. We learned this from the owner's manual. There are also Explorer Forums that are full of great information.
