Can a female Flowerhorn cichlid and a Male Jack Dempsey successfully produce offspring?
Q. I think my flowerhorn and Jack Dempsey could possibly have a mating pair. Is this possible or am I seeing things? I noticed these two had one side of the tank and my other Dempseys and one Red Terror stayed to the other side.

A. Though its very difficult to mate a flowerhorn, but they are compatible to JD's, so yes, if you are lucky, they will mate and successfully.

What nutrients do flowerhorn fish need?
Q. I want to know what part of nutrients do flowrhorn fish need the most. Why some flowerhorn fish food contains "Ash"? What do moistures do? What part of nutrient makes flowerhorn fish's bump bigger?
Asked by Sammi - Fri Jul 4 23:02:31 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You need to basically keep their main diet a good cichlid pellet. I really like Hikari's Cichlid Gold pellet, it is a good all around cichlid food that contains everything they need to stay healthy. I have just ordered another pellet food from Hikari called Bio-Gold, it is supposed to be very good for South American cichlids. Flowerhorns are hybrid cichlids, but the species they come from are all South and Central American cichlids, so as long as you keep the diet the same as it would be for any other SA or CA cichlid you should be fine. No food will help the hump get larger on the Flowerhorn, this is a genetic trait, feeding it a specific food will do nothing to the hump that will not happen naturally. MFK

Is it possible to put a Male flowerhorn and a Female flowerhorn together in a 50 gallon tank?
Q. Will they fight? Are female flowerhorn aggressive?
Asked by aznsuperman123 - Fri Jun 20 02:19:41 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It is possible, but it won't last more than a week or two with so little space. As adults, a pair (meaning that they decided to cooperate with each other) should have at the very least, a 75 gallon tank. These fish form pairs on their own-- simply putting a female and male together means nothing. If they don't pair up, one will likely kill the other (usually the male killing the female). While it could work short term, the chances are very slim, and you'd still need to upgrade in the future.

Can Jaguar or Oscar be kept with a flowerhorn?
Q. I want to buy a juvenile jaguar or oscar, like 2-4 inches in length, currently i have a flowerhorn 4 inches and 2 convicts cichlid on the other side of the divider 2 inches, is it possible to introduce an oscar or a jaguar? I bought my flowerhorn when it was about 1 or 1half inches. I been keeping it for 4 months, excluding its tail fins, its 4-5 inches now.

A. I wouldn't advise it, how long have you had the Flower Horn? Flower Horns grow very quickly and are a very aggressive fish. My Flower Horn Chichlid went from 5in to 8in in four months but it depends on the size of the tank. I keep mine in a separate tank from my other fish

What kind of parasite do i have in my flowerhorn's fish tank and how should i treat it?
Q. Hi, yesterday I bought small fish feeders from a pet store and fed about five to my flowerhorn. Five hours later my boyfriend notice alot little white worms floating around the tank. We didnt think it was the feeders. So quarantine our fish, and did clean out tank and add new water. We saw that the feeders were dying quickly so split them up in 3 of our tanks, w/ none of our flowerhorns in the tank yet. Minutes later, my boyfriend saw one of the feeders spitting up tiny white worms. Then we started to assumed the parasites came from the feeders. The next day I confronted the fish store owner and he said the worms wouldn't of grown so fast. And it wasnt from his feeders. The worms are in all 3of my tanks and start seeing them after I put… [cont.]

A. Those don't sound like a parasite at all but instead the larvae of some small fly or midge. Odds are good the feeders had fed heavily on them at some point at spit them out from time to time and they ended up in all of your tanks. It's also possible they were in your feeder tank when you added the feeders and were then transferred to the main tank with the feeder fish. One thing is for certain, the feeders would not have been spitting out a parasitic worm, it just doesn't work out that way. Since most treatments for internal parasites are quite harsh on the fish, I would suggest you watch the situation carefully for any changes. If these are larvae, they will hatch within a few days and you will probably notice tiny gnats or midges… [cont.]

FLowerhorn fish is too aggressive, what should i do?
Q. I've bought a flowerhorn fish today and put it in a tank with iridescent shark and small fishes, it was chasing my iridescent shark and eat 2 small fishes. I don't care about small fishes, but what should i do with the shark? Will pet store take it? Flowerhorn and iridescent fish are both juvenile, FH is about 1 inch and irid shark is about 2 inches long.

A. This is what happens when you do not research prior to buying a fish. Flowerhorns are best kept solo. They are indeed very aggressive, and will eat anything that fits in its mouth. I hope you have an extra 75 gallon tank on hand, just for the flowerhorn. I also hope you have a 2000 gallon tank ready for the ID shark. They grow enormous. Below is picture proof of how large they grow.

I have another who feed with mashed fresh oyster. Do not know the reason, but their luohans are looking good. Most luohan owners will tell you to use fresh ingredient, including brine shrimp and red prawns to enhance red colour if you want too.

A. You can BUT its pretty much pointless, the flowerhorn is a carnivorous fish and will need protein in their food, goldfish food is mostly herbivorous so it will prove pointless. If you do feed it to them and just feed them that, your flowerhorn will eventually die to poor nutrition.

A. Put them in separate tanks. Most tank dividers are not sturdy and a determined oscar could probably get through. If you don't mind my asking, what size tank? ~Woot, 120 gallons.

Which part of nutrients makes flowerhorn fish hump bigger?
Q. Fish food contains protein, fat, fiber, moisture, phosphorus, which part of nutrients makes the flowerhorn's hump bigger?
Asked by Sammi - Sun Jul 6 21:25:45 2008 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments
A. None, the flowerhorns hump has nothing to do with the nutrients that it ingests. The size of the hump is controlled by the breeder and what fish are used to create it. This is the goal of most breeders is to get the biggest hump possible, this is mostly why you will see the prices of flowerhorns vary so much. All you can do is make sure to give the fish a big enough tank so that it can grow, keep the water clean, and feed it a healthy diet. Other than that there is nothing you can do make the hump bigger, just be patient. MFK

You might mistake a female for a Green Terror... Although in rare cases, some females tend to have koks and are higly sought after and valued. Females look more like any South American Cichlids...

Asked by Rolando D - Tue May 13 16:01:05 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I am not a fan of these at all, actually I think they are pretty much a waste of money. The problem with them is that they are a man made strain, and on top of that they charge top dollar for them. In my opinion, I'd much rather have a pure cichlid such as a Dovii, Managuense, or a Salvini. Either way, some people are really atracted to these hybrids and so be it, you can find them going for $50 - $1,000, I think the priceing really goes by how big of a hump the fish has been bred to grow. There is really no scale for pricing to say how much you should or shouldn't pay, it is all about how much are you willing to pay. Below is a site that sells them young for a decent price, good luck. A. I am not a fan of these at all, actually I think they are pretty much a waste of money. The problem with them is that they are a man made strain, and on top of that they charge top dollar for them.
