Aesthetics (also spelled æsthetics or esthetics) is a branch of philosophy dealing with the nature of beauty, art, and taste, and with the creation and appreciation of beauty. It is more scientifically defined as the study of sensory or sensori-emotional values, sometimes called judgments of sentiment and taste. More broadly, scholars in the field define aesthetics as "critical reflection on art, culture and nature." Aesthetics is a subdiscipline of axiology, a branch of philosophy, and is closely associated with the philosophy of art. Aesthetics studies new ways of seeing and of perceiving the world.

Can anyone explain what Practical Aesthetics is?
Q. I am looking at starting some actor training this summer and while I have a good grasp on Strasberg's Method and the Adler Technique, I do not quite understand Practical Aesthetics.

A. This David Mamet's school of thought best place for an explanation is from the horse's mouth. Read True and False by David Mamet Many actors consider this a life changing book. I myself am from the Uta Hagen school of thought.

To what extent does the sex drive influence human subjective judgements about beauty and aesthetics?
Q. Given how important sex is to us, and given how much our perception of the attractiveness or otherwise of the opposite sex is governed by our sex drive, what about beauty and aesthetics in general? thanks

A. In terms of human beauty, the influence is very great. Schopenhauer pointed out that our judgements in these matters were heavily influenced by the reproductive urge; would we say that people were as beautiful if they were very elderly, for example. In aesthetics in general, there are two basic strands of thinking. One is in accordance with your idea, in that it says "the beautiful" is defined in terms of its use in meeting human desires. Buildings, food, paintings, landscapes, people - all are beautiful if they answer a pre-existing call in us. The other approach - from Kant - stresses the opposite. The beautiful - as opposed to the exciting or stimulating - is that which we experience dispassionately. We know we are in the… [cont.]
