Speech is the vocalized form of human communication. It is based upon the syntactic combination of lexicals and names that are drawn from very large (usually >10,000 different words) vocabularies. Each spoken word is created out of the phonetic combination of a limited set of vowel and consonant speech sound units. These vocabularies, the syntax which structures them, and their set of speech sound units, differ creating the existence of many thousands of different types of mutually unintelligible human languages. Human speakers (polyglots) are often able to communicate in two or more of them. The vocal abilities that enable humans to produce speech also provide humans with the ability to sing.

A gestural form of human communication exists for the deaf in the form of sign language. Speech in some cultures has become the basis of a written language, often one that differs in its vocabulary, syntax and phonetics from its associated spoken one, a situation called diglossia. Speech in addition to its use in communication, it is suggested by some psychologists such as Vygotsky is internally used by mental processes to enhance and organize cognition in the form of an interior monologue.

Speech is researched in terms of the speech production and speech perception of the sounds used in spoken language. Other research topics concern speech repetition, the ability to map heard spoken words into the vocalizations needed to recreated that plays a key role in the vocabulary expansion in children and speech errors. Several academic disciplines study these including acoustics, psychology, speech pathology, linguistics, cognitive science, communication studies, otolaryngology and computer science. Another area of research is how the human brain in its different areas such as the Broca's area and Wernicke's area underlies speech.

It is controversial how far human speech is unique in that other animals also communicate with vocalizations. While none in the wild have compatibly large vocabularies, research upon the nonverbal abilities of language trained apes such as Washoe and Kanzi raises the possibility that they might have these capabilities.

The origins of speech are unknown and subject to much debate and speculation.

A. although the one of the technological advances of out time include the internet, it is important to take precautions and administer its use to children. The internet not only provides a vast array of informational sources, but also inappropriate material like pornography. there are also hackers, viruses, and sex-offenders that find their means through the internet.

What is good way to start a speech on history?
Q. Hi. I'm in grade 7 and have a speech to work on. It has to do with the loyalists and new canadians (all part of grade 7 history). so my speech should be at least 10 minutes long. i need to know how to catch the judge's attention with my first sentence. perhaps humor or a question. also, what other things do i need to do for conducting a good speech? I really want to win, as i'm representing my class. thanks!!

A. If you want to win you need to do a few things - First you need to write your speech BEFORE you write your opening statement. I know it sounds backwards but until you know what and how you are going to say something it's hard to write a good attention getter. I would not try to memorize a speech word for word because it's too easy to forget a spot and then you will be lost. I would also not write it down and read it because it will sound like someone "reading" a speech and there is nothing more boring than that. I would write out an outline such as this: Introduction to speech Point 1 of the speech a b point 2 A B etc. Summary & conclusion of the speech A B By doing this your speech will stay on track - you won't loose your… [cont.]

What should I talk about in my informational speech about toilets?
Q. This informational speech is for my college level introductory speech class. I thought toilets would be a lesser topic that the teacher has had to sit through and listen 1000 times. The speech has to be 6-8 minutes. Any good attention getters? Any good clinchers? Some general information I should cover? Thanks!

A. Go with toilets of the world ! Some systems in Europe are alien to the traveler and make hilarious stories - ie. French toilets systems, where the whole space is showered ! Really - my brother got caught in that ! You simply cannot picture his embarrassment - What a fun speech you will give !
