How do you become a professional dancer?
Q. To hip hop dancers, ballet dancers, any dancers, How did you become a dancer? While I am not planning to be a dancer, I am very interested to know how you become a professional. Like, what are the good dancing schools, how many years does training take, when did you start dancing, and so on. Also, what kind of career opportunities do different types of dancers have? If you are a professional dancer, or even if you are not, please post an answer. :) Not that kind of dance. Thank you for your answers. :) However, I would appreciate if more people posted their opinion on how many years of training is reasonable/typical and what kind of career opportunies are available. A. The biggest thing is to practice as much as possible and get yourself out there. Taking classes in various types of dance is important to find what you are good at and gain skill. But after that, a lot of it has to do with natural skill (not everyone can be a dancer) and motivation. It is a lot of hard work, as you spend hours practicing and have to regularly audition (to get your name out there and start performing). While I was trained in various dance forms, I currently choreograph and so I tend to make new moves and use different styles in my work, and I don't always use classically trained dancers because sometimes the best dancers are those who have the natural talent and had the motivation to learn on their own and keep trying. The dancer is standing still on one leg. What is the x component of the friction force?
Q. A dancer is standing on one leg on a drawbridge that is about to open. The coefficients of static and kinetic friction between the drawbridge and the dancer's foot are u(s) and u(k), respectively. N represents the normal force exerted on the dancer by the bridge, and Fg represents the gravitational force exerted on the dancer. Assume that the bridge is a perfectly flat surface and lacks the curvature characteristic of most bridges.

How much ballet should a dancer take to effectively branch out into other genres?
Q. This is a general question for all dancers, not just for professional ballet dancers. How much ballet training is sufficient for a dancer to have "technique" and effectively acquire and excel at other styles of dance? I know barre and centerwork are ubiquitous even at the professional ranks, but I'm referring to before that.

A. Well honestly, you should never stop taking ballet. Ballet is the center of all that is dance. It helps with a lot of other styles and techniques. Like tap for instance, you need ballet! Pretty much anywhere you go, dance instructors will tell you that. Best of luck!

Q. What is dancing? The basics please break it down from A-Z. What is a dancer? Who can be considered a dancer?
Asked by Rose - Mon Aug 27 00:54:00 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Take ballet class. And acro. And tap. And lyrical. And jazz. And technique. And hip hop. To be well-rounded, you must be good at everything. Turns, leaps, kicks, and tumbling are all "specialty" areas. Also, you should be able to pick up choreography fast, work well with others, know how to count music, be able to free style/make up poses in all types of dance, and remember routines. You should be able to take correction easily, and have a ton of dedication. You should be responsible to bring all props, bring shoes, bring costumes, and show up for class and rehearsals and competitions and performances. dancing is art. its expressive movement, normally to music, but i guess it doesnt have to be. anyone who dances is a dancer :] generally… [cont.]

A. I'm a dancer and am studying to become a surgeon. I can't tell if she's fun or not, I mean it varies person to person. Your profession doesn't tell much on your personality, mainly on your education. She could be more on the serious side, but I'm sure she should be a nice girl wanting to have a good time and being able to get away from the strict atmosphere of a studio. I'd have things in common with a nurse or doctor just because I am also interested in their field of work. Find out about music, food, and just things she enjoys in her free time. Girls like men to listen to them, so make sure you pay attention and act like you are really interested in her. Don't be intimidated by a dancer, there is nothing to be afraid of. How can you become a professional dancer or actress?
Q. My little sister who is 10 years old really wants to be a dancer or an actress, like in the broadway shows. She's got talent, and it's something she absolutely LOVES! I really think that she could make it in show business too.Do you know any ways she can achieve this goal? We live near Philadelphia, PA, if that helps with anything.

A. At ten years old, it takes more than just talent. You need a resume. Anything she's done from singing in the church choir to playing the role of "Little Red Riding Hood" in the school play (don't mention the school or the church's names). You need good quality photographs. Must show her complete face: Two eyes, nose, ears, hair, mouth. No sunglasses, no hats. No large or sparkle prints. Some should smile some should not. To begin with snap shots are fine, but it is a great head shot that opens doors. Professional head shots can START $300.00 In the Pa., NJ, NY area the law does not require you to have talent representation. Which means you may submit yourself to roles or projects. But, this is can be dangerous. There are… [cont.]

A. When you start to dance for yourself you'll feel way more accomplished. Also having a space where you can work or just run a barre at least once a day is an amazing help! Hard work and dedication, also take the corrections given in class (even if not directed to you) and try working through them on your own time!

What are the requirements to be a professional dancer?
Q. And where can you go to be certified as a professional dancer?
Asked by adictedto24 - Mon Apr 14 15:46:53 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. What employers usually look for is flexibility, good feet, strength, technique, balance, stage presence (do they notice you/do you stand out), and musciality. They also look at your individual style and if it will work with their choreography and the entire show they are working on. The definition of a professional dancer is that you are getting hired and paid to dance. This could mean individual gigs or being part of a company. You can't get certified as one. It takes YEARS to get good enough to go pro, and even if you have the technique, feet, and flexibility doesn't mean you have the presence and originality to get jobs. Many people never make it in the dance world because it's so competitive.

Q. I am interested in joining an apprentice company (leading up to, of course, a professional company) and have no idea to start. What are some noted apprentice companies that could potentially suit a contemporary ballet and modern dancer?
Asked by Kardell - Fri Feb 20 20:59:22 2009 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. That all depends on what *kind* of apprentice company you're looking for, and in what area! If you are looking to eventually join a professional ballet company, an apprentice or "second" company is a great place to start. The Joffrey Ballet has a second company, as does ABT. Many regional companies will take you on as a full fledged corps de ballet member off the bat, which is also a great way to gain experience and connections! In terms of modern companies, the San Francisco-Bay Area is positively flush with them. If it's more modern you're looking to pursue, check out some of the studios and schools in the area and see what companies and artists are in residence with them. Attend shows, see who and what you like, and you'll have a… [cont.]

A. If you really put your mind to it, and take classes several times a week, it's never too late. I knew someone who started as an adult, and ended up doing music videos. Don't ever give up on what you want to do. And don't ever let anyone tell you, you can't do something. You can do anything you want to do. You just have to not give up. Good luck!

A. There are essentially two routes to becoming a professional dancer, given that there are two sides to the dance industry. There's the classically trained, ballet-based, route that opens the most doors for professional employment, but especially in the concert dance/ non-profit sector of the dance industry. That sector of the (American) dance industry is concentrated in New York City and fans out from there. Then there is the competition dance studio route that, depending on the quality of the training, can lead to jobs in the for-profit/ commercial side of the dance industry. That sector of the dance industry is concentrated in Los Angeles and, likewise, fans out from there. There are many kinds of for-profit gigs such dancers can get… [cont.]

A. I'm that exact height, and I weigh 106 lbs, and dance about 5 hours a week. I went online and found out that I should be consuming about 1700 calories a day. But I want to lose weight, so I'm eating less than that. I suggest going on to mypyramind.gov there's a place on that site where you can enter all the food you eat in a day (pre-packaged or not), and it tells you how many calories you consumed.
