What are some activities I can do with my BIG dog inside while it is raining outside?
Q. I want some ideas of some fun activities that I can play with my Weimaraner indoors. It is raining outside, and he hates going out in the rain. I want some activities that don't result in wrecking my house, as those Weims have A LOT of energy! Please comment, give me some of your fun activities you play with your dogs inside (big dog or small dog even), and thanks for commenting!

A. Aim at a good brain work out rather than a physical romp, and you'll still have a happy, but tired dog at the end of it. You can buy great wooden toys where you hide food in the maze/cups and the dog has to work out which bit of the puzzle the food is under, or you can use the rainy time to increase your dog's obedience, or repertoire of tricks - how about adding roll over/play dead/bow... or teaching him to fetch a toy by name? Clicker training is useful here. Of course, he'll still need a good run when it stops raining - but you'll both have had fun and he'll have learned some new tricks at the same time.

What extracurricular activities should I participate in if I want to get into dental school?
Q. I'm interesting in becoming a dentist when I'm older. So while I'm still in high school, what extracurricular activities (inside and outside of school) should I participate in so I can get a better understanding of what being a dentist is like? How about in university? On another note, since extracurricular activities and the "whole picture" is considered along with the dental school application, I'm wondering how students who aspire to become dentists find time to volunteer, job shadow, etc, while at the same time, excel academically. Thank you!

Q. I have to apply to the professional phase of pharmacy school this fall (so im already in college) and i am just looking for some ideas on different activities and organizations that might look good to put on the application. if anyone has had any success with a certain activity or organization it would be greatly appreciated! A. Yikes. That didn't sound good. Schools of that level like to see that you're really dedicated to something you do - they like to see that you put a lot of time and effort into it, and stuck with it for several years. If you have anything like that, you should definitely include it. Ahh, it's bad to just add "extra things", if they honestly didn't have a big impact on your life. Get involved with something that you're actually really interested in, not just what will look better in the end. You'll be happier and better off that way. However, some things which DO look good would be the work in the pharmacy (excellent), any leadership positions you may have, or community service. Graduate schools love to see community service. So you… [cont.]

A. - Volunteer at a local animal shelter. - Have a fund raiser help support your local center. - Your group could sponser an adopt an pet add in your local paper. - Most local news papers have a food and cooking section, you could contact the reporter that runs this and suggest they run more vegetarian choices in this sectoin. - Host a vegetarian dinner for others in your community. - Set up a veggie website for your school and town. - Set up an information booth at community events. - Pressure (don't protest) your school cafeteria to be more vegetarian friendly. BTW: Protests do very little to promote the cause. Instead do positive things that make use look good to the meat eating public. An example is the adopt a pet add verses… [cont.]

A. It would be great to see positive talking, singing and music from the caregiver for the infants that continues into the other age groups. Have rattles or musical instruments as the babies can begin to hold onto them. Caregivers could even do some water play or sand play with the older babies for a sensory activity. Finger and hand painting are fun too. A soothing, clean but fun environment would help with all the activities.

What activities would an Alaskan malamute succeed in?
Q. I have three Alaskan malamutes at home. They are two males and a female. They are 1 year old and have been very bored lately. Because of the hot weather and there heavy coats I don't know what to enroll them in to get them working throughout the whole year. I want them to experience new activities and have fun. What can I do? Also, i need sports to go all round. I do sled pulling and weight pulling in the winter but I don't know what to do in the summer spring or fall!
Asked by Samantha - Sun Jun 7 09:21:06 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Since you have winter sports, how about a summer sport like Dock Diving? That way it keeps the dog cool, as Malamutes have a lot of coat and overheat easily. Obedience, or Rally (which is more fun) can be done indoors all year round and don't require the speed of agility of flyball.

What activities can I plan to make a retirement party memorable?
Q. My dad's boss and I are planning a large retirement/55th birthday party for him. We are planning for a large group of about 75 people. It will be a surprise party. Dad is a fisherman, so I've decided to have a fish fry and go with a "gone fishing" theme. I've found plenty of party favors and decorations, but I'd really like to get the guests involved. I think it would be hard to play games with that many people. I'd like to try to have some activities that are fun and funny that will make the party truly memorable. Dad is not a sentimental person, I don't think he'd care too much about a scrapbook and I know he won't watch a videotape. I'd really appreciate any suggestions you can offer! Many thanks.

A. Make a list and call it Fish Tales. Make several things that are true about your dad that people would never have known , and then make several that are false, read them out loud and by a show of hands, have people guess if it's a fish tale/ or true story. Your dad will like hearing things from his past or things you have noticed about him while growing up and the guests will love learning more things about the guest of honor!

What activities do your students do when they enter the room in the morning?
Q. I'm looking for ideas of activities my third graders can do while we are waiting for everyone to arrive. We have about a 25 minute time span from the time the first kid walks in the door until everyone arrives. For the past two years I've had the kids write down homework assignments, sharpen pencils, and complete a worksheet, but I'd like to find something more fun and meaningful (and that won't take a lot of time to grade/correct) for next year. Any suggestions? Thanks!

A. There is a series put out by Evan Moor that I love! It's a daily reinforcement of math and language activities. They are in packets (M - F) and every day has 5 questions. The books are set up nicely and usually work as exposure to new concepts on Friday's and review the other days. Daily Language Review: Daily Math Practice: Daily Word Problems: I wrote a grant this year, so starting next year, I'll be using "Mountain Math" and "Mountain Language." I used it in another district and love it. It's similar to the above books but it's a bulletin board set. You can see more about it here:

What is the best activities to use with mental health clients?

Asked by Ms. Tweetybird - Sun Jul 13 12:23:45 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. What kind of skills building? I would probably incorporate some behavioral techniques, like social skills training. You can work on building interpersonal relationships...(eye contact, tone of voice, etc) and you can give out little homework assignments. Start small and build their confidence to interact in more anxiety provoking situations. (Ex: have them strike up a conversation with someone at the grocery store...then work their way up to initiating conversation with a stranger, etc) You can practice in therapy and model the behavior. Then, encourage them to practice these skills in real-world settings. This is beneficial for clients who have difficulties in social situations.

Asked by BrownEyedBettie - Wed Jan 7 23:54:31 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Visuals, visuals, visuals...those will the most important to him. Using pictures to communicate schedule, tasks, etc. would be very important in communicating daily activities. A lot of hands on manipulations when actually looking at learning tasks would be great also. For example, if helping him with math, give him actual manipulatives, like counting bears, to help work through addition and subtraction problems. When working on spelling words, giving him alphabet tiles or foam letters to spell out the words. You have to think in the sense that what he hears does not always make sense and the brain will sometimes get confused. What he sees does make sense to him...think that way and you shouldn't have any problem.

What two activities can slowly reduce economic profits to zero in a monopoly?
Q. The question reads: "In a monopoly, economic profits can slowly be reduced to zero through two activities. Discuss the two." I can't find this in the book or anywhere online. Please help. Give me a head start and a good reference! Thanks!
Asked by whirled_queen - Thu Mar 27 01:23:21 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A monopoly is characterized by a single seller and many buyers. The seller has the discretion of exploiting the people and charging higher prices from consumers. Yet the profits can become zero due to the following two: 1. Monopolies do not last long as competitors soon take over. In such a situation the profits would become zero because the buyers would have a choice of buying the rival products and hence bring down profits of the previous producer. 2. The second would when the consumers stop buying the products altogether. If the consumers can do without the product, the profits would obviously go down. Hope this gives you a good head start. Best of luck. n.b. Both these activities usually take place in the long run.

A. I agree with Verde's suggestion, and would like to offer something in addition. Of course you could do a community service project in your own community, however, why not think globally? You could help an impoverished village somewhere in the world (sending books to students in Uganda, etc.). How? Go to and register and look around. Indeed, you don't have to do this yourself. You could enlist some of your classmates and even garner credit for one (or more) of your classes. If you'd like more advice on this, feel free to contact me.
