Acting. <----?
Q. I want to become an actress. I am 14 years old and acting is my dream. I have some experience, but nothing major. I want to act for any show, especially something in Nickelodeon as a minor character. Can someone please tell me how I do it? Oh yeah, if you are gonna post rude replys, trying to crush my dreams, don't even bother...chances are I'll report you for abuse. Thanks.

A. When I was your age, acting was my biggest passion. But you're still growing and your tastes and interests may change in 5 years. However, if you're really passionate about drama and acting, look for some local acting groups in your area. Is there a drama program at your school? A class? Take as many courses as you can. Actors never stop learning! Most importantly, it's very seldom that people can just go to Hollywood and get their dream acting job overnight. You have to work your way to the top. Keep your head high and you may find yourself working for Nickelodeon! :-D

How can I get better and better at acting besides acting classes and joining local plays?
Q. I mean, is there a way that you could practice acting alone in your house everyday. Because unlike singing, sports or playing an instrument which you could practice and train everyday with the right tools to become the best in that certain field, acting is different. How do you train yourself in acting so you can become the best in it? And is it just subjective, meaning other factors like the roles given to you, the emotional depth of the roles given to you, natural talent and your personality affect how your being good at acting is determined?

A. This is such a huge question. Here's what I think: Everything you do in your life adds to you being an actor. Every skill you have, every experience you have... is what you bring to your characters. So, you are "practicing" everyday if you are paying attention. Your tools are basically your voice, your body and your brain. So push yourself to expand those all the time. And yes, acting is totally subjective. You will never be able to control whether other people think you are "good" or not... might as well stop trying. Every actor who you consider to be "good" or even the best... has been fired from one job or another. The key? YOU have to believe you're good. YOU have to know that you are the best you can be. So, do what you… [cont.]

What is the difference between acting school and acting classes?
Q. I have been confused about this for a while .Is an acting school like a separate school that you go to like full time or is it more like a class that you would do after real school. Also if you know any good acting schools/classes in north georgia or atlanta ish I would be greatfull ,thanks

A. Most people who use the two terms are not differentiating between them properly to begin with. At a facility like Juliard, one might have acting classes but Juliard itself is a school of the arts. Then of course there are private coaches or theater groups that have classes where one might attend a class once or a few times a week.

How do I get started acting in Michigan?
Q. I have taken acting classes in college, acted in many high school plays, and been in a few student films. I want to start getting a more professional acting career/resume together before moving out to LA. How would you suggest I go about g improving my chances in LA right now, while still living in Michigan? Also, I have taken my own headshots (I know it sounds dangerous but I am a professional photographer) and I have written a decent beginner's Acting Resume.

A. There are regional theatre companies in every state. I imagine you'll have to go to a major city like Lansing or Detroit but also places like Grand Rapids or even Battle Creek might have companies that offer ways to work toward an Equity card. After you get into Equity, a lot more resources should become available to you for classes and audition information. Get Daily Variety or one of the other show biz papers so you can see what's out there. If there are any good film locations in Michigan it would be great if you could get yourself there for extra work. Your best bet is to keep watch in these little papers to know what's going on in film or theatre. Some traveling road shows use local people in bit parts and it wouldn't hurt to… [cont.]

Where do I start in my acting career?
Q. Okay, here's the deal. I am in middle school at the moment, and I really am into acting. The only problem is that I can not start with a Drama Club, because there isn't one. Also, I do not have any Acting Schools to go to in my area. What do I do? I need more experience in acting, and I am planning on becoming an actress! I live in Florida, Northern Florida.

A. Start doing a search for actors agentcies, but be carful cause some of them are scams. After that just do everything you can & accept/ audition for anything in plays (nomatter the part) Sooner or later you'll get "noticed". Especially since you live in Florida.

How to persue an acting and singing career?
Q. I have been wanting to Act and sing ever since I was way young. Im taking acting and singing classes while being in plays and concerts in and outside of school. I am planning on pursuing it while working very hard after I graduate high school. I was just wondering though, with all the big celebrities that we see and hear of today, is that what they did to help pursue their career? What else did they do if you know? Thanks!

A. That's awsome that your doing all ur school plays and everything, so keep that up. Some steps you need to take would be getting your headshots, and then finding an agent. Some acting schools bring in agents to search for talent, or there are now development centers that can help you find an agent. The agent will send you to auditions with casting directors and hopefully they will hire you. Then you just pretty much try your best to work your way up from there. As for singing, a few musicians have gotten discovered by making demo tapes and sending them to record companies. You really just want to sing anywhere you can get a gig, anywhere anyone will see you- its always a new chance to be discovered, such as school plays, talents shows,… [cont.]

What's the difference between theatre acting and acting in tv and movies?
Q. I've always wondered if the acting methods are the same in theater and in tv and film. I've noticed that the actors overact in theater and people think it's good acting, but when they overact in movies and on tv, people think it's bad. Is there a difference?
Asked by newmoon - Sat Feb 7 10:47:58 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Well, The audience is farther away in theatre than Tv, so the gestures and persona must be bigger. In Tv, the acting just has to be small, enough for a close camera. To me (altho, im biased, im a theatre actress), theatre acting takes more skill to pull off without looking done, tacky or too fake, but still be receptible by the audience.

A. A lot of people will tell you to get an agent. An agent is only something you should seek once you are a trained, polished, working actor. You should never pay an agent, agency, manager, or casting director any money or fees prior to you landing a job they sent you on. Then, and only then, do they get paid - and that is a percentage of what you make - usually 10 - 15%. It seems to be a popular myth in this forum that you NEED an agent to be a working actor. That is simply not true. You can find a lot of auditions and jobs on your own without an agent. I have done professional theatre, films, and national television all without an agent. Is voiceover acting something you have to be naturally good at ?
Q. Would you say that voiceover acting is something you have to just be naturally good at, or is it something anyone can grow to become good at? I'm trying to do some voiceovers for something I'm doing, I don't particularly want to since I don't talk a lot anyways, but do you think it would get much easier the more you try? Thanks. Peter. This was put after hawkthree and Kabs replies. The thing is I don't want to be an actor, I just have to do the VO as part of it.

A. -The only thing you don't have a lot of control over is whether you have a voice that is in demand for voiceover's. Generally a high pitched squeaky voice won't do no matter how well you act. Like a lot of things, the ability to do voiceovers will improve with proactice.

How do you find a reliable acting agency?
Q. I'll be in Oklahoma for a while, and I was wondering where in oklahoma you find a reliable acting agency? (please don't say "talent agencies don't want nobodies" because I have a couple credits from indie film extras and local commercials) Anyone know of any acting agencies in oklahoma?
Asked by ??? - Wed Jun 11 04:25:21 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Reliable talent (acting) agencies are usually SAG/AFTRA affiliated or franchised. You can check for SAG franchised agents here: They also take a commission (10-20%) of what you make on jobs. They shouldn't charge you any upfront fees or require you to use their photographers/classes, although they can recommend some. Here is a complete list of agents in Oklahoma: These are agents I'd recommend: Visit their websites and do a background check with Better Business Bureau. Then follow submission guidelines or send in headshot & resume. Good luck! Hope I helped! Tip: Don't go with John Robert Powers or John Casablancas. They charge huge upfront fees and don't get you anywhere. (Scams!)

A. Let's be realistic. It's very rare for people to actually make it as a tv or movie star. Chances are, its not going to happen. Given some of the poor actors and actresses we have out there making millions of dollars, it takes more than skill! I'm not saying you have to become a plastic surgeon but I think you should either a) take two majors--acting and something more practical or b) major in something practical and minor in acting. After all, there is a chance you will have to take out loans and you will need to be able to find a good job after college. If acting doesn't work out, there isn't much you can get with a degree in acting.

A. There are many different methods to acting, one of the worst being "the method", It is good to dabble when you are young 'cause then you get an understanding of what works for you and what doesn't. What works for me is this: Acting is about relating, not pretending. At the end of the day, every great actor does that. Life experience is one of our greatest mentors as an actor. So the next time you get your heart broken, feel passionate about something, feel injustice regarding something, feel threatened, happy, crazy, remember where that feeling comes from and what it is you are trying to do. Funerals help you with drama. Prior to being at a relatives funeral I had a very different relationship with a scene that required me to cry. … [cont.]

A. I would stick to craigslist, and stay away from google. What was most sucsessful for me was checking and searching craigslist EVERYDAY, you need to be consistant and always looking. Don't only look in one area too. You're near grand rapids, so Chicago is what... almost 3 hours away, and Detroit about 2 and a half...Look at those cities too. Check for craigslist auditions in those area's, and make a day trip out of it. If people what you, and you're within reasonable driving distance then you should try and make the trek out there. I'm sure they're other modelling agencies in Grand Rapids area...or atleast I would assume, I could be wrong. Look into some of the local college's too, filmstudents are always casting in one way or… [cont.]

I want to start acting profesionally in film and TV, where should I look for an agent?
Q. I live ten minutes outside of Boston, Massachusetts. My only credible acting "experience" is my Theatre Arts class which I take at school. I don't want to get scammed.

A. It depends on the procedures in the city where you live. Ask your actor friends, familiar with acting in Boston, to give you guidance. Each city has their own procedures, you have to make sure you follow what is appropriate for actors in Boston.
