Acting is the work of an actor or actress, which is a person in theatre, television, film, or any other storytelling medium who tells the story by portraying a character and, usually, speaking or singing the written text or play. Most early sources in the West that examine the art of acting (Ancient Greek: hypokrisis) discuss it as part of rhetoric.

What are the best acting classes in Chicago?
Q. I am interested in enrolling in some acting classes here in Chicago. I've been acting for about ten years and really need to brush up my skills. I know of many - ActOne, Victory Gardens, Steppenwolf, Acting Studio Chicago, Actors Studio - what are some opionions on the type of classes? And where should someone with experience start?

A. You need to network! You already know where to go, so the best thing for you to do is ask to see if you can watch a class and see how well the teacher teaches, watch some shows/plays that some of these students are acting in so you can evaluate the kind of talent that these studios have. Contact the universities/colleges/the atres and talk to the acting profs/teachers/managers there and see who they would recommend as an acting coach. Everyone will know/know of each other so finding out information should be easy.

How do I get started acting in Michigan?
Q. I have taken acting classes in college, acted in many high school plays, and been in a few student films. I want to start getting a more professional acting career/resume together before moving out to LA. How would you suggest I go about g improving my chances in LA right now, while still living in Michigan? Also, I have taken my own headshots (I know it sounds dangerous but I am a professional photographer) and I have written a decent beginner's Acting Resume.

A. There are regional theatre companies in every state. I imagine you'll have to go to a major city like Lansing or Detroit but also places like Grand Rapids or even Battle Creek might have companies that offer ways to work toward an Equity card. After you get into Equity, a lot more resources should become available to you for classes and audition information. Get Daily Variety or one of the other show biz papers so you can see what's out there. If there are any good film locations in Michigan it would be great if you could get yourself there for extra work. Your best bet is to keep watch in these little papers to know what's going on in film or theatre. Some traveling road shows use local people in bit parts and it wouldn't hurt to… [cont.]

How do I start an acting career?
Q. I'm 12 and I am really intrested in acting. I've done plays at my school and at theatres, but I would like to start acting on reality TV or movies. I don't have an agent and I am not that proffesional. I'm told to have a good singing voice and I have been doing dance since I was 5 and gymnastics since I was 4. Please help me! Also, if you know any good websites for castings on roles, it would be very helpful too :) Thank you.

A. First step is always to get an agent. They don't cost anything but they do take some of your profit from the jobs you book. The thing is, if you send in an audition to a director, they'll barely even consider you if you don't have an agent. They'll assume you aren't that serious about acting and probably not as good as the people who have agents. Google agencies in your area and find yourself one. They'll find you auditions and get you on the right track to your dreams! Good luck!:D
