How does your states police academy work?
Q. In Kentucky everyone goes through the same 18 week police academy. That is except for Lexington, Louisville and the state police. I was wondering if it was like this in other states. I heard from someone that there are some departments in some states don't require their officers to go to an academy.

A. Here in Texas if you want to be a State Trooper you go to their academy in Austin, but there are many small city Police Departments and Sheriff's Offices that train their own new officers.

What is a good academy or chool to become an airline pilot?
Q. I don't know much about what schools are the good ones. All I know of is Delta Connection Academy but I've heard mixed reviews of it.

A. Jet University in Fort Luaderdale, Florida. They will take you from nothing to licensed commercial jet pilot with a guaranteed position as first officer in only 9 months. The job guarantee is in writing and with a regional airline.

What happens after you graduate from the fire academy?
Q. I want to know what happens after you finish the fire academy do they assign you to a firestation? If so what happens then? Do the Academy help you find a job?
Asked by Keith W - Mon Jul 28 00:19:41 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Typically they do not assign you to a firestation...they will often help you locate openings or have connections that may help place you on a list for applying to a particular fire department. Having the knowlegde is a great start but you will need to apply and present yourself in a professional manner. There will often be tests and questions that each FD will want to ask you... Good luck

What is the difference in Fire Academy and taking Fire courses in college for becoming a firefighter?
Q. I'm planning on becoming a firefighter for SFFD I'm gona be going to SF city and I know they have a Fire Academy but is that something separate I have to sign up for or is it part of the fire courses they provide?
Asked by Josh E - Wed Nov 19 17:34:07 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. They are separate. The Fire Academy is about six months, give or take based on how often you meet. The course is the basic requirement that you will need to become a firefighter. It should include your FFI and FFII (or equivalent training for your state) Haz-Mat Ops, and may include an MFR certification. You have to have those certifications to become a firefighter. The college courses you are looking at apply to a degree in firefighting and are not required to become a firefighter, although they certainly increase your chances of getting a job and make you a more knowledgeable firefighter. For a degree in firefighting, you can usually go for a one year certificate program, an associates or a bachelors. Hope that helps.

How was your training at ATP flight academy?
Q. I'm seriously considering ATP flight academy. I'm think I'm too old (30 going on 31 in Dec) to wait much longer so I decided on accelerated school. I understand the pro's / cons. I'm thinking about getting my PPL at a FBO in the mean time. How was your schedule for the career program??? Did the instructors know enough to teach you? Did many of your peers pass/fail? What kind of flight experience did you have prior to the program? Would you reccomend it to a friend?

What kind of things should I be doing to get into the Naval Academy?
Q. I am going to be a junior in high school next year and I am extremely interested in attending the Naval Academy. I am wondering what types of things I should be doing to get accepted into the Academy? I am planning on taking the ACT and/or the SAT this year and possibly my senior year. What other things should I be doing?

A. First, to qualify my answer: I am a graduate of USAFA and worked at USNA shortly after commissioning (I cross-commissioned to the Navy because I could not fly). I also applied and lived near West Point and Kings Point growing up so I saw them both close up repeatedly. I have never been to the Coast Guard Academy and was not interested in attending. I would rate the academies as such: 1. USAFA better well-rounded education. All courses are 3-credits, you do not get additional credit hours for classes with labs so you have to complete a heavier course load to graduate. They also have a wider variety of majors than the others. The athletic facilities are far superior than the other academies and Colorado has some great scenery. … [cont.]

What is a daily life at a military academy like?

A. It depends; USMA, USAFA, USNA? Each has its own programs. I would reccomend going to each school's homepage and browsing around a bit. If that doesn't work look around amazon.com or something similiar for recruiting videos or informational videos. I've heard of one I'd like to get called "Surviving Westpoint" made by National Geographic. Its like 6 vhs tapes long, make on 03 I believe. If either of those two don't work for you, email me. I am in contact with cadets in two of the three academys and can ask them for you, but only direct questions, I can't ask them such a broad question... Goodluck, and again, email me if it doesn't pan out.

How to prepare for the Alameda County Sheriffs Academy?
Q. I am in the process of applying to the Alameda County Sheriffs Academy, and I am wondering how exactly I should prepare. I am on a daily running, and work out schedule. But would still like to know what and how I should adapt my workout. Also I have had some college education, but should I go back and refresh on my grammar and math? Any and all answers are greatly appreciated especially from former students, or current law enforcement personnel.

A. Make sure your upper body strength is up to par. Do lots of pullups, pushups and dips. Practice climbing over a fence if you can. Don't focus only on long distance runs, do short sprinting too. Set up cones or some other kind of markers in a row. Sprint to the first one and back, then the second on and back, and so on. You also might want to check out this link to a show called The Academy. Its a reality show about the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Academy. Shows you alot of stuff you can expect to see.

I would find out which departs around are hiring and ask them if they send you to an academy--alot will, so that will save you some money. Also, some depart if their large will have their own--like Lubbock, TX (she had applied with them) I wouldn't pay to go b/c you still would have to go through the hiring process, interview, oral board.

What is condsidered recent marijuana use to the chp academy?
Q. My fiance recently applied to the academy, but was disqualified at the interview because he admitted using marijuana 4 months previously (in December of '07). I was wondering how he should wait before applying again? He did not use marijuana frequently in the past, and has not used it since December '07. It is his dream to be an officer, and takes it very seriously, especially since we're expecting a baby boy next month, and he wants to set a good example for his son. A. I don't think there is one best gymnastics place in the US at this point in time. I think that different coaches have different strengths and you have to find the right match for each individual gymnast. Otherwise we'd have a national program like most other countries do.

Can I go to the police academy before applying to a department?
Q. The department that I wish to apply to (Orlando Police Department) says that the ideal police officer is one that has a college degree, has been in the military, and/or has Florida Police Certification. I have also heard that police departments like it when the person applying has already been to the police academy because the department doesn't have to sponsor them. I am aware that you obviously would have to go to the city's approved police academy, but can I go to the police academy before applying? And if the department hires me, will I have to go back to the police academy, or will I be able to start probation?

A. No. Apply to other departments and get the training you need. The experience will put you ahead of other candidates. You should be able to transfer. As for what you've "heard" about other police departments...you should be doing your own homework. Look at their websites and request an application. Do the job of getting the job. What you "heard" is not enough if you are serious about becoming a cop. Good luck with your future..

Do you have to take the physical fitness test before or during the Philadelphia police academy?
Q. I took the philadelphia police test, and wanted to know do you take the physical fitness test before the academy or during the philadelphia police academy? Also what would they do if you are underweight?
Asked by cstockton03 - Tue Jun 19 12:19:41 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Any agency that will potentially hire you will mandate you pass a physical agility test. They will also send you in for a comprehensive physical exam. Reason? Because for you to be covered by the local pension plan, you can not have any existing pre-employment defect that would prevent you from preforming your duties and put them in a position of liability. As for underweight. You need to carb up as much as possible. Lots of fruits, pasta, rice and moderate exercise. Maybe also see your doctor and express your concerns about your weight and see if they can recommend diet supplements that are safe and effective for your needs.

Q. I took the philadelphia police test, and wanted to know do you take the physical fitness test before the academy or during the philadelphia police academy? Also what would they do if you are underweight?

What else can you do with the police academy?
Q. My boyfriend is in the police academy, but is no longer sure he wants to be a cop. I told him he should stick it out and finish up, but he thinks he's wasting his time and money continuing. How can I encourage him to keep with it and finish the training? Is actually being a cop different from the academy? Do different cities offer different experiences of police work than the one he is familiar with? And what else can he do with that training besides just being a police officer? Is there other service work that it might prepare him for? He is willing to go back to school eventually.

A. There is a virtual myriad of options for him. I put myself through the Academy, became a Police Officer, and then left to become a Federal Agent. He could become a Criminologist, a Crime Scene Investigator, any NUMBER of things...of course, some fields will require additional training and education, but Academy training is ALWAYS a good foot in the door in ANY field of law enforcement. Without knowing him, I can only speculate that he, like most, is having a hard time dealing with the BS the instructors dish out. Let me assure you, this is only to weed out the people whose hearts aren't really in it. Tell him to stand strong, and be an understanding source of support for him. Odds are, short of getting married and having kids, this will… [cont.]

Can anyone give me some insights when I enroll at Flight Safety Academy?
Q. I'm presently taking up my BS degree and will be graduating 2 years from now. I plan to take up my flying lessons abroad. I found this school which seems to have good programs for international students. Is FS academy a good school? Thank you very much!

A. I didn't use FS for initial training..but have used them several times for recurrency training... They were top-shelf! Very thorough but rather $$
