A. J.P., (Pollock) during and after Jungian therapy sought to develop an approach to painting that would ultimately arrive at an archetypal expression associated with a purity of thought experienced in the dream-state, or in the unencumbered expressions of a child's freedom from elitist, figurative academicism. Pure formalist abstraction is the conversion or expression of images of "real" things - places, objects, emotions,etc, to a purely non-representational statement in line, color or mass. Expressionism is a method by which the artist uses broad movement or the aggressive intermingling of colors, shapes and forms that may include direct, though altered representation (deKooning's women) of "real" people, places and things.
