Abstract art uses a visual language of form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Western art had been, from the Renaissance up to the middle of the 19th century, underpinned by the logic of perspective and an attempt to reproduce an illusion of visible reality. The arts of cultures other than the European had become accessible and showed alternative ways of describing visual experience to the artist. By the end of the 19th century many artists felt a need to create a new kind of art which would encompass the fundamental changes taking place in technology, science and philosophy. The sources from which individual artists drew their theoretical arguments were diverse, and reflected the social and intellectual preoccupations in all areas of Western culture at that time. Abstract art, nonobjective art, and nonrepresentational art, are loosely related terms. They are of similar, although perhaps not identical meaning. Abstraction indicates a departure from reality in depiction of imagery in art. This departure from accurate representation can be only slight, or it can be partial, or it can be complete. Abstraction exists along a continuum. Even art that aims for verisimilitude of the highest degree can be said to be abstract, at least theoretically, since perfect representation is likely to be exceedingly elusive. Artwork which takes liberties, altering for instance color and form in ways that are conspicuous, can be said to be partially abstract. Total abstraction bears no trace of any reference to anything recognizable. In geometric abstraction, for instance, one is unlikely to find references to naturalistic entities. Figurative art and total abstraction are almost mutually exclusive. But figurative and representational (or realistic) art often contains partial abstraction. Both Geometric abstraction and Lyrical Abstraction are often totally abstract. Among the very numerous art movements that embody partial abstraction would be for instance fauvism in which color is conspicuously and deliberately altered vis-a-vis reality, and cubism, which blatantly alters the forms of the real life entities depicted. GNU Free Documentation License Want To See Why I Love And Do Abstract Art? Q. As some of you might already know I can paint realistic and surrealistic paintings (and do so often enough) and portraits. But over the years I've heard the cliche many times over that artists paint abstract art because they don't have the real talent to do real art. That's not always the case, my friends. I work in abstract art also because it allows for a whole universe, a mental landscape, of expression that realism and neo-realism often enough does not allow. Want to see what I mean here? It frees the creative soul and, when it comes out right, it's fun! (As always you can click on the image to enlarge it.) Why do you paint abstract art? Most of the time, people who are critical of abstract art are those who have never attempted to create it... I have found doing abstract artwork to be equally as challenging as doing realistic...especially when the finished piece is questioned by those who only want to see a tree with green leaves and a brown trunk... I love to let go of the rules and go abstract...it's very liberating :) Kudos :) Answered by magic 8 ball - Mon Feb 5 10:09:06 2007 Where can i find abstract art? Q. I'm looking for abstract paintings. I have a certain artist in mind, he paints pictures where he makes things look like other things, one example is a road that looks like it's a sheet. They don't have to be by this artist, but something along those lines, things that are interesting to look at and make you think. Anything you can give me is good, whether it's a website, a name of a painting, or a name of an artist. Thanks! Asked by Carlie! - Sat Jul 25 23:29:12 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Try Jackson Pollock if you want to find abstract art. There is also a video about his life that I watch in one of my advanced art class. But one of my favorite artist is Mr.Brainwash who has some really great abstract piece on the streets of L.A. He also has a website. Before I was not interested in experimenting with paint or even holding a paint brush until I got inspired by these two great abstract artists!
